I tried going back to mixing digital and hand-made while also working originally in grey-scale rather than converting a coloured illustration:
This has more of a sense of depth, the white shape cut into the background creates layers and difference between all the similar shades. It is still too blended together, any slight change in tone is lost - for this to work I think it needs to be a lot simpler and graphic. Also I need to find other ways to frame it because having a wash in the background in black and white just makes it harder to pull part. I think it was a good idea to make the image in grey-scale though as it means it doesn't become a completely different image when I convert it.
