Looking at shape and texture
Images don't always need an outline - can be just as effective, if not more in some cases, just as a shape.
Can still tell what an image is of without having all the unnecessary detail - simplifying the image to its basic forms. Shapes don't have to be block colours either - gives image a bit more depth when shapes are done in materials like watercolour where there can be varying tones within the shape.
